Bodega Las Tablas, is an authentic Spanish Tasca, with a focus on the use of the freshest ingredients available, and honoring traditional old-world Spanish recipes. With a full and diverse menu, Bodega Las Tablas is an innovative culinary proposal, which has brought the small-plates format of Tapas-style dining to the forefront of the culinary scene in San Juan.
Located in a cozy space, collocated next to renowned Puerto Rican artist Ruben Rios’ art gallery, Bodega Las Tablas, is inspired by traditional Tascas in Madrid, where rich woods line the walls, and the décor is all about the food, the wine and simple, fun, human interaction. After all, “tapeo” is supposed to encourage guests to share their food, their thoughts, and fun with those around them. That is why, the main dining room in Bodega Las Tablas, has three communal tables.
Located on Canals Street, in Santurce, Bodega Las Tablas is the in the epicenter of a cultural and culinary artery of San Juan. It can be said that “La Placita” as it is commonly known among locals, can be likened to Washington DC’s U-Street Corridor, or New York’s Village. The cultural and culinary synergy that is experienced in this area made it the ideal home for Bodega Las Tablas. It is no coincidence, that owner, Eduardo Hilera chose this neighborhood, as the home for his new culinary proposal.
Eduardo is the mastermind behind the concept of Bodega Las Tablas. A foodie at heart, and a connoisseur of fine wines and spirits, Eduardo’s vision brought together a world-class chef and one of Puerto Rico’s best-known mixologists, to create San Juan’s first and only true Spanish Tasca.
A graduate of Penn State University, he is no stranger to the business world. Eduardo is a firm believer in the importance and power of developing small businesses. Four years as a Legislative Assistant in the United States Congress taught Eduardo that for change to occur, it must happen in the private sector, and by people doing what they truly love, and that is how Bodega Las Tablas was born.
Javier Rojas, our resident mixologist, is also coincidentally a Marine Biologist by trade, but his true passion lies behind the speed rack. Having worked in the food and beverage industry for over a decade, in the finest establishments in his native Arecibo, including the Arecibo Country Club, the Arecibo Yacht Club, and finally, Lenel Restaurant, Javier decided he wanted to move to San Juan. In 2013, Javier came in second place in Diageo’s World Class Competitions, and is currently favored as one of the frontrunners for 2014. A history buff at heart, Javier is into classic cocktails, and he pours a mean Old Fashioned with his favorite, Zacapa 23 rum. He is a stickler for tradition in everything he does, from his ever-present necktie, to the way tables are set, and the fresh, classic ingredients in all of his cocktails.
Currently, Bodega Las Tablas can accommodate parties of up to 16 persons in our main dining room, our private roofed patio, the only one in the “La Placita” neighborhood, can accommodate parties of up to 20 persons.
